The Museum of National History

500 years of Danish History

Frederiksborg Castle has housed The Museum of National History since 1878, when founded by brewer J.C. Jacobsen, the founder of Carlsberg. The museum is now an independent department of the Carlsberg Foundation.

The museum depicts the history of Denmark through its rich collection of portraits, history paintings, furniture, and decorative arts. Touring the museum, you will encounter people and events that have helped shape the history of Denmark from the Middle Ages to the 21st century.

The historical interiors of the museum and the splendorous rooms of the castle give a sensuous impression of changing styles and epochs, as well as the social conventions of earlier times. The collection of portraits is the largest and most significant in Denmark, with new works continually added to the collection.

The Museum of National History is open every day all year round.
